The Old Town of Xanthi
A village well maintained and preserved. The Old Town of Xanthi started to be rebuilt in 1830 after two earthquakes in 1829. It prospered in the mid 90’s until the early 20’s, a period in which the tobacco trade flourished which occupied most of the population. Built on a hill, keeping its traditional form, it enchants the visitors and its residents every time they walk along the footpaths. It is one of Greece’s most traditional villages, which has been left untouched by the ravages of time and retains the elegance and grandeur.
The Old Town of Xanthi has great historical value . Characterized as a traditional settlement in 1978 and is one of the best preserved architectural ensembles throughout Macedonia and Thrace . The eclectic architecture , the Belle Époque , the effects of the Italian Renaissance, the German romanticism and neoclassicism Greek diffuse from one end to another. Visitors to the Old City walking the cobblestone streets will admire the masterfully houses of religion , education and art . Small squares reminiscent of bygone eras , buildings that tell the history of the city. All exude a sense of wealth and beautiful life, lived by those who lived here in past centuries .
